Our brain can give us an excellent lesson for life. When we sleep, the brain makes a kind of clean slate. To learn, it is necessary to establish new connections, or synapses, between the neurons. These connections allow neurons to send signals to each other quickly and efficiently. It is in these networks that we store the new memories and the skills we learn. However, neuroscientists discovered that synapses that grow “exuberant” during the day are “pruned” at night. Our brain automatically makes a selection of the information that must be saved and discards the rest.
The funny thing is that, by eliminating all unnecessary information, worthwhile memories are better memorized. Psychologists that are renowned made certainly and appreciated that when that process does not occur, our memories become more confusing. In addition, selective forgetting is essential to reduce emotional impact to the events that occurred during the day. This process that occurs naturally gives us a great lesson: save old grudges, feed frustrations, relive dramas and give excessive importance to things that are not worthwhile, only generates chaos and dissatisfaction. The wisest thing is to learn to ignore everything that is not worthwhile and that can affect our inner peace.
Learning is adaptation and we need to adapt constantly to new situations, to new challenges. Sometimes we forget that our capacity for learning is infinite, that learning is necessary for our survival. In fact, under normal conditions, it is impossible to spend a single day of our lives without learning something. Fortunately! The plasticity of our brain is one of the most wonderful abilities and, at the same time, one of the least used. It is necessary to understand once and for all that the passage through the school, the institute, and the university does not “give us form” definitively and permanently. Obtaining a certificate, a degree, a brilliant academic record … does not assure us that we are prepared to face the future.
So its main objective is to prepare students so they can learn autonomously throughout their lives, that they have a great ability to adapt to changes that they have a high dose of creativity to face future challenges, that they have a critical and analytical spirit without end. Nobody can assure us that the contents taught in the school are forever and that is a reality that we do not just have in mind in our way of teaching or in the things we teach. The teaching we are offering in most of our schools has an expiration date, it will lose its validity at some point in your life.
Adaptation to change is accompanied at the emotional level by a little stress because when the human being has to leave his comfort zone and leave the safe and known terrain, he feels uncomfortable. However, we adapt to the new thing since we are babies. This is shown, for example, in the process of crawling or learning to walk.
